Different energy sources provide us with the power we need to live and work. Solar, wind, geothermal and biomass are just a few of the sources. These sources aren’t just the primary source of electricity, but also can be used to heat and transport. The main challenge with these energy sources is that they could cause greenhouse gas emissions when they are burned to produce electricity. This creates a need for more green energy sources.
The most common type of energy is fossil fuels, comprised of coal, oil, and natural gas. They were formed millions of years ago when prehistoric animals and plants died and were buried under layers of sedimentary rock. Then, under the appropriate conditions, they gradually transformed into carbon-rich compounds which, when burned, generate energy. They are not renewable since they will be exhausted in our lifetimes, or in many lifetimes.
Renewable energy sources are constantly replenished. The sun is the primary source of renewable energy, since it provides light and heat. We use it to power our homes and businesses, as well as to drive vehicles. Wind is an energy source that is renewable and generates electricity by spinning turbines. We have been using it since the first began to harness the wind for millennia. Finally, we use biological processes to make ethanol (a clear alcohol that can be used to create fuel) from waste and crops.
As a result, hydropower is the largest renewable energy source in the United States, though wind and biofuels are expected to be the next to take over. Hydropower draws on nature’s hydro cycle to harness the power of swiftly flowing water, which is then used in turn to produce electricity.
